D-Spot creates ‘Homeboy Rice Grits’ with Jubilee Justice rice blend

Delores Murphy, owner, D-Spot Catering

Guests at the grand opening of the Jubilee Justice rice mill were treated to a creative and delicious variety of rice-based dishes served by Delores Murphy and her team at D-Spot Catering, Alexandria’s Best Kept Secret. One of the most popular dishes served was “Homeboy Rice Grits,” created from a blend of ‘broken’ parts of our Jubilee Justice Jasmine Rice and our Black Belt Sticky Rice.

“Brokens” are the parts of the rice that breaks during the milling process. Those broken parts, which cannot be sold as whole grain rice, are still deliciously edible and can be sold as rice grits.

Here is the recipe for Homeboy Rice Grits.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups of water

  • ½ cup of Jubilee Justice Black Belt Sticky Rice* or substitute Lotus Foods Forbidden Rice.

  • ½ cup of Jubilee Justice Jasmine Rice* or substitute Lotus Foods Jasmine Rice.

  • 1 tsp salt (optional)

  • 1 tbsp butter (optional)

***

  1. Blend the rice grains into a food processor at high speed until it has the consistency of grits.

  2. Bring water to a boil and slowly stir in rice grits and salt.

  3. Reduce heat to low, cover and let cook for 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until rice grits are fully cooked.

  4.  Remove from heat and serve.

Tips: For thicker grits reduce water and for thinner grits increase water. Rice grits are more coarse than corn grits, so cooking time may vary.

*Jubilee Justice Black Belt Sticky Rice and our Jasmine Rice will become available for sale next year.
